Houston debaters celebrated Texas Independence Day by competing in the HUDL City Championships for 2019. On March 2, HISD and CASE students from all over the Greater Houston area gathered together at the Bob Casey Federal Courthouse to participate in the elimination rounds of HUDL's five debate formats: cross-examination (policy), world schools, public forum, Lincoln-Douglas, and Congressional.
U.S. District Judge Alfred Bennett began the day by welcoming the students to the courthouse, orienting them to the functions of the courts, and discussing the importance of education and hard work. Then students spread out to the various courtrooms to debate the topics of the day. When the day came to an end, HUDL crowned its champions for the 2018-2019 season.
Winners in CX, Worlds, LD, and PF receive college scholarships generously underwritten by the family of Benjamin Donald Hatfield and the HUDL Young Professionals Council as well the opportunity to compete in national tournaments later this year with the support of HUDL contributors.
